Motoring Offences

As a driver, statistics indicate that, at some time in your life you are likely to face a motoring offence. At PS Law, our team of motoring offence solicitors recognise the concern this may cause you and the implications for keeping your driving licence, your insurance premium and, often, your ability to perform your job or run your business.

Road traffic law is complex, but our experienced team of motoring offence solicitors can guide you with timely, specialist advice and representation on issues including but not limited to:

  • Drink / Drug driving
  • Dangerous and careless driving
  • Speeding
  • Use of mobile telephones whilst driving
  • Penalty points and ‘totting up’ disqualification

Funding your case for a motoring offence

Legal Aid is not always available for most motoring offences, however where it is available we will advise you on eligibility.

Where Legal Aid is not available we offer a service based on either a fixed fee scheme or hourly rates, depending on the circumstances and complexity of your case. In either case your matter will be handled by a partner in the firm with many years’ experience. Our hourly rate is £250 plus VAT. Our typical fixed fee scheme is as below:

Initial advice

For initial advice there would be a fee of £250 plus VAT. This includes a detailed consultation with you, consideration of any documents and advice confirmed in writing setting out the legal position and your options.

Representation at court

For representation at a Magistrates’ Court hearing with a confirmed guilty plea from the outset the fee would be £500 plus VAT. This includes a detailed consultation with you and preparing for and representation at a single hearing.

For representation at a Magistrates’ Court trial, the fee would be £1,500 plus VAT for the first day and an additional fee of £750 plus VAT for each subsequent day. This includes a detailed consultation with you, full preparation of your case and representation at court.

For submissions to the court that you would suffer ‘exceptional hardship’ if you were disqualified from driving under the ‘totting-up’ provisions the fee would be £1,500 plus VAT. This includes a detailed consultation with you, assistance in getting together your supporting evidence and representation at court.

(Note: for court hearings outside of the area where we are based (Milton Keynes and Northampton) we will charge an extra £50 per hour plus VAT for time spent travelling, plus expenses usually mileage at £0.45p per mile and car parking).
